Orchids adapt to a wide variety of climates and thrive well under stressful conditions. The thick pseudobulbs help them in retaining water and tide over unfavorable conditions. Knowledge about the climatic needs of the orchid
variety to be grown makes the process of growing them in greenhouse easier.
The advantage of growing orchids in greenhouse is that you can grow plants year round. This is so because you can control the light, temperature, water and humidity provided to the plant and thus have healthy plants. Growing orchids in greenhouse is the most treasured hobby for the orchid enthusiasts. Some of the aspects related to growing them in greenhouse are listed below.
1. Comprehend the temperature requirements- Know the climatic requirements of your type of orchid so that the right temperature can be replicated for them. Orchids may require cool, intermediate or warm conditions. These temperatures should be closely maintained especially during the day. The greenhouse can be divided to maintain different temperature levels if orchids from different climatic zones are wished to be grown together. Also, ventilators and extractor fans can be used to regulate the temperature.
2. Sustain humidity levels- Water sprayers can be installed near the orchid greenhouses. These can be used to maintain humidity levels in the vicinity and the sprayers should be used at least once a day, and more often during summer.
3. Ensure adequate supply of light- Greenhouse roofing glass should be of good grade to avoid interference with the quality of light. Shade cloths can be used to reduce excess heat since orchids shouldn’t be subjected to direct heat, and removed during winter when they need more light.
4. Use suitable material design- Greenhouse made of aluminium covered with a double layer polycarbonate like Lexan is advisable. A propane heater can be used during winter to fight cold and other fans for constant air movement.
5. Tend the resting orchids- Orchids enter resting period at the end of the flowering season during cooler months. They should be kept in well lit and dry locations till the first growth shows.
