Miniature Orchids

Miniature OrchidsMiniature orchids have smaller size and may reach maturity in a small pot about 3 inches in diameter. Generally the miniature orchids are less than 6 inches in height and lightly colored. These small orchids have the same flower power as their larger counterparts and their compact size allows them to fit easily in small containers. There are many varieties of dwarf and compact orchids and some of the miniatures to grow are listed below.

1. Epidendrum longipetalum- The miniature orchid blooms sequentially and has flowers blooming for most of the year. The genus has more than 1,000 different species which are mostly epiphytes. It generally grows about 4 inches or 10 centimeters tall and the stem resembles a cane Dendrobium with a couple of leaves at the top. The plant blooms beautiful creamy green or pink flowers with delicate dangling petals. The species is originally from Mexico and requires a moist environment for proper growth.

2. Epidendrum porpax- The miniature species grows quickly into beautiful specimens. These are easy to grow and bloom quickly. They have fascinating flowers that are green or pink in color.

3. Gongora horichiana- These orchids are very small in size, almost less than half the size of most orchids. They grow in small pots and bloom with dangling spikes of tan wasp-like flowers with beautiful orange lip. They grow in moderately moist conditions.

4. Oncidium cheirophorum- They are among the favorites and produce beautiful inflorescences of clear yellow blooms. They are known as the ‘dancing ladies’ and have been nicknamed as ‘hand carrying orchid’. The multiple clear yellow flowers are very bright and fragrant and the flowers form on 12 inch inflorescences. They are easy to grow and require moderate light and moisture.

5. Pleurothallis caligularis- The small plant produces half-inch sized red flowers with a white lip. The flowers are very beautiful and the plants require high humidity and good air circulation to flourish and flower.
