Wild Orchids of Phuket
A Dendrobium species found on top a tree during my boat trip around Phang Gha Bay. This spot is found on Khao Tapo Island, overlooking the famous James Bond Island. The many small islands here form part of the Ao Phang Ngo National Park which is a haven for many tropical indigenous orchid species. One can simply paddle a canoe, ride in a small motor boat or even trek and you will see many species within the first 30 minutes of the jourrney. An enchanting sight indeed.
Another orchid, this time a Bulbophyllum species found on the same island. It's flowering but due to the over exposure of the shot and angle of the flowers makes it difficult to identify this species. Notices the elaborate growth of pseudobulbs throuhout the trunk of this tree.
Papilionanthe teres growing lithophytically on a large rocks formation with roots clasping onto the grooves of the rock for support. Some stems are as long as 2 metres in length.
Another lithophyte, this time a Dendrobium. Flowers are small about 0.5 cm and blooms gregariously on some clumps.
A Cymbidium species I caught on camera while tracking up the Bangpae Waterfalls, one of 2 large waterfalls on Phuket Island. Here you will also a host of other Dendrobium, Bulbophyllum, & Vanilla species.
Arundina graminifolia growing and flowering freely along the roadside where the vegetation is exposed to direct sunlight. This variety exhibits white petals and sepals with the exception of the lip which is pink with a yellow centre. The ones found natively growing in Singapore tend to have pink petals.
Nai Yang National Park is know for its majestic beaches and beautiful coral reefs but along the coast lie counttless number of palm and coconut trees each spotting large clumps of Cymbidium finlaysonianum. Many of them were in flower when I was there.
