Growing orchids is an attractive option for the hobby growers. Potted orchids are becoming popular and are increasingly becoming common in stores. However, for the plant to grow and bloom, suitable conditions need to be provided along
with efficient culture. Orchid care differs from that of the normal houseplants. They vary in their temperature, light, water and humidity requirements. Understanding the specific requirements of these plants is the key while growing orchids.
Choosing the orchid species to be grown is the first step. Orchid plants with bright green foliage indicate good health and can be selected for best chance of success. Plants that have brown or black patches on leaves indicate diseased state while yellow leaves signal poor health of the plant and therefore should be avoided. Providing a suitable environment for proper orchid growth is the next important step. Emulation of the natural habitat of the plant is a practical option.
Orchids prefer humid environment and this can be accomplished with the help of a humidifier or a container with moist gravel in the vicinity. However, the plant should not be left standing in water as that can be harmful to the orchid. Useful lighting conditions should be created for the orchids for their proper growth. They should be protected from direct sunlight and incandescent light can be used in winter.
Watering orchids is another important criterion while growing orchids. Watering weekly is better for their growth since they don’t prefer to be over watered. Clay pots can help dissipate water quickly and keep the medium dry; therefore they make for a better choice. Proper air circulation is another important factor in orchid care. Selecting the suitable medium for orchid culture is important, as also the choice and dose of fertilizers used. Special orchid fertilizers should be used in weak proportions to grow them effectively.
Hobby growers can venture into growing hybrids of Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Vanda and Epidendrum. Phalaenopsis orchids are ideal for beginners since they are easy to grow and produce many flowers per spike. Oncidium orchids, referred to as dancing ladies are easy to grow too.
