The beauty and elegance of these flowers make them highly desirable as ornamental flowers. However, to obtain better results, proper care should be taken while growing them. The article bestows some of the tips for an efficient orchid care.

Orchid Care Tips

1.  Water orchids with care- Orchids should be watered thoroughly when dry and allowed to dry thereafter. Over-watering can be harmful to the species and should therefore be avoided.

2. Provide appropriate temperature- Orchids grow best between 18-30 degrees and can withstand a variation of around 10 degrees during the night. They should be protected from sudden temperature changes and harsh direct sunlight.

3. Feed orchids at right times- A balanced water soluble fertilizer should be used every other watering. Over feeding should be avoided and the fertilizer dozes should be kept low. They would however require regular feeding during summer and less frequent feeding during winter.

4. Grow them in suitable containers- Most orchids are epiphytes and like to have aerated roots. Burying them forcefully in soil should be avoided and the roots should be allowed to grow outside the pot, if they wish to do so.

5. Provide proper doses of light and humidity- Orchids prefer humid conditions to thrive and humidity trays can be used for the purpose. Along with humidity, a balanced air movement would enhance the growth. They have varying light needs and should be tended accordingly. Artificial lights can be used during cold winter days.

6. Re-pot when necessary- When orchids outgrow their pots, they should be carefully replanted into larger pots with porous media and better drainage.
